Sydney’s Metal Fabrication – What to Expect From Your Metal Fabricator

Metal fabrication is a term used to describe the process of bending, cutting, and assembling metal structures from various metal parts and scraps. The metal cutting process during production is usually done by slitting or shearing, laser cutting, or stamping. The bending process is done by pressing the brake. Press brakes use different molds to achieve the different types of curves required for the project.

Both cutting and bending metal during production is the first step. After each piece of metal is cut and bent to the appropriate size and shape, they are assembled by welding. Stamping is another metal fabrication process that is used for large quantities of the same part. The first step is to create a seal or template that will be used in a stamping machine to stamp the parts of a piece of sheet metal.

This process is used to make a large number of equal parts. Building a mold is expensive, but once a mold is obtained, many parts can be fabricated quickly, reducing the cost of parts. Stamping is commonly used for items such as vents, panels, hinges, and more. While many different types of metals are used in metal fabrication in Sydney, steel is by far the most common.

Steel is a basic iron alloy with varying amounts of added carbon, typically 0.2% to 2.1%. Carbon is the most common alloying element because it has the lowest cost and gives the metal desirable properties such as increased strength, ductility, and hardness, depending on the amount of carbon added.

While carbon steel is very useful and flexible, one problem is corrosion and rust. If this is a problem for the project, the element must be covered or painted to protect it, or it can be made of stainless steel for corrosion resistance. The alloy of steel, chromium, and nickel creates the most common type of stainless steel production, namely Type 304 or "surgical steel".
