What Are the Benefits of TMS?

There are many benefits of transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, as a therapy. The technology has been used for decades to treat a range of conditions, including depression, chronic pain, and cognitive impairment.

One potential benefit of TMS is its ability to alter brain activity. This was demonstrated in a study published in the journal Brain Stimulation in which participants received TMS to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (a region associated with decision-making) while they watched a sad video. After watching the video, participants’ brain activity was compared with that of control participants who had not watched the video. The researchers found that TMS induced increased activity in the same regions of the brain as was seen in people who reported feeling less sad after watching the video.

TMS may also have antidepressant properties. A study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry found that TMS administered to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex significantly improved symptoms of major depressive disorder in patients who had not responded to two other types of antidepressants. However, it is important to note that not all patients will respond

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that has been used to treat a variety of conditions for over 30 years. TMS is considered a safe and effective treatment for depression, migraines, chronic pain, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. The benefits of TMS include reducing pain, alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms, and improving cognitive function.
